Road Traffic Accidents

Road traffic accidents are the most common cause of personal injury in Ireland and you may be unfortunate enough to have been involved in a road traffic accident. The number of cars on Irish roads has trebled since the 1970s.

If you were unlucky enough to have been involved in an accident which involved a Hit and Run driver or an Uninsured driver, you can make a personal injury claim to the Motor Insurers’ Bureau of Ireland. Their role is to compensate victims of road traffic accidents caused by uninsured and unidentified vehicles.

Road Traffic accidents can be/are often caused by:

  • Driving too fast
  • not keeping a lookout
  • not breaking quickly enough or at all
  • not leaving enough stopping distance
  • ignoring traffic signals or road signs
  • not controlling the vehicle properly

Our Services
If you have been injured in a road traffic accident - and the accident was caused by someone else who breached another road user’s duty of care - you may be entitled to make an accident or personal injury compensation claim, for the injuries and losses which you have suffered as a result of the accident.

What are the most common types of road traffic injuries?
The most common type of injury receiving compensation for road traffic accidents are whiplash, back and spinal injuries. In serious injury cases, you may be able to claim compensation for medical bills, loss of earnings and compensation for personal suffering.

Different compensation processes
Your injury is most likely to have been caused by being involved in a road traffic accident as a driver, pedestrian, motorcyclist or pedal cyclist.  In these cases, your personal injury claim for compensation would be made against the insurance company of the person driving the vehicle which collided with you.

Alternatively, if you were injured as a passenger in a car or on a motorcycle, you may make a claim against the insurance company of the person who was responsible for the accident. This might be the driver of the vehicle you were in or the driver of another vehicle.
