Port Tunnel Dublin – Speed Tracking System
Important News for regular port Tunnel users. A new ‘Point to Point’ style speed enforcement system has been introduced at midnight on 31st May 2017 in the port tunnel. Just ahead of the June bank holiday weekend!
Traffic levels through Dublin Port Tunnel have increased by 40% over the last 5 years and as a result there is statistically, an increase in the potential for car collisions and road traffic accidents. ‘Average speed camera enforcement systems’ aim to reduce the potential for road traffic accidents. As a result of these cameras statistics show that there is typically a 50% reduction in the collision rate once in operation.
How will the new port tunnel speed camera system work?
New speed cameras will be the first in Ireland to work on an average speed basis rather than by video or at a fixed point. This means that they will record the time that a vehicle enters and exits the tunnel and divide the 4.8km (distance between Coolock and Dublin Port) by the elapsed taken to travel the journey in order to calculate an average speed.
The speed limit in the tunnel is 80km per hour meaning that if motorists complete the 4.8km tunnel in less than 3 minutes and 36 seconds they will have broken the speed limit.
What happens if I break the speed limit?
Motorists who breach the speed/time will receive a fixed charge fine from the Gardaí.
If that average exceeds 80km per hour, the vehicle’s registration details will be automatically passed on to Gardaí for the usual enforcement action.
Any driver that completes the tunnel in under 3minutes and 36 seconds will be in breach of the limit. An important point to note is that the cameras will cover all the lanes in the tunnel, so drivers will not be able to evade them by switching lanes.
Drivers cannot expect any additional warnings according to Transport Infrastructure Ireland. It is important for motorists to take extra care to avoid a penalty of fine due to a lapse in concentration.
All drivers using the Dublin Port Tunnel should notice large yellow poles with cameras. They support the average speed camera enforcement system.
Our message…leave early for the Airport – Avoid the fines – Avoid accidents!
