Busking – Know the Law!
Recently Dublin City Council announced a review of bye-laws to busking in the City. So before you pick up that guitar and head to the City Centre to earn an extra few euro, have a look at the information below!
*You now need to apply for a permit to play which will set you back €30 per year, €60 if you are using an amplifier. We haven’t heard if Bono and Glenn need to apply for their annual sing song!
*A Street performer cannot perform after 11pm and before 9am, Except on a pedestrianised streets where you cannot start until 11am. Ideal for those of you who are not early risers!
*A performer can only perform in a location for a maximum of 2 hours in a given day. Better set those timers!
*If you are performing in a public place, you are solely responsible for your instruments, equipment and props. So make sure you have insurance!
*The Sound produced in the vicinity of a performer shall not exceed 80 decibels, except in Temple Bar. Does this mean we need to wear ear plugs for a stroll through temple bar??
*Authorised Officers are equipped with digital Sound Level Meters and will measure the volume generated by performers. If you are playing too loudly you won’t hear them coming!
*A Performer cannot charge members of the public for the performance. However the public may leave money with you for your performance. Don’t forget to bring a guitar case or bucket!
*A Performer cannot perform within 50 metres of another performer – So better bring your measuring tape!
*Here’s the bad news. Anyone who contravenes any bye-law is guilty of an offence and liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding €1500
Enjoy the performance!
