Making a Compensation Claim for Accidents at Work

How do you make a compensation claim for accidents at work in Ireland?
There are 5 simple steps that you should take:

  1. Report your accident and injury to your employer. Do this in writing; do not just tell your employer about it.

  2. Go to a Doctor. Even if you may feel that it is not necessary to go to a doctor and that the injury may go away, it is essential that you go to a Doctor and tell him about your injury – even if you have no intention of making a claim. Then, you will have a record of your injury; if the injury becomes more serious and it is necessary to bring a claim, you will need medical reports during the legal process for personal injury compensation claims.

  3. Issue a notice within 2 months of the accident: If you have been injured in an accident at work in Ireland, you must issue written notice to the person you hold responsible for your injury within 2 months of the accident. If you do not, there may be cost implications for you.

  4. Apply within 2 Years: You have two years from the date of your accident for you or your solicitor to register your application to the Injuries Board (formerly known as the PIAB) for a claim.

  5. Get a medical report on your injury. You will need a medical report to include with your application.
